Fly Fishing Report - 4th of July Weekend

Its the first weekend in July and things are finally starting to settle out on the rivers. After a hot middle June and some lower flows, we got some good rain and an influx of water into our rivers here in West Michigan.

The stud smallmouth was caught swinging a brightly colored streamer just off a seam.

For a few days, the water was high, off color, and in some systems it looked like chocolate milk. Despite the high and dirty water, however, it was much needed and our rivers are now fishing great. High water is not necessarily abad thing and if you watch the gauges wait for the levels to stabilize (even if they are high) and you’ll discover the clarity gets better even though the water is still cruising by.

This 20” smallmouth was caught on a brightly colored streamer holding tight to structure.

That’s how It’s been on the Kalamazoo River. We have had some lights out fishing in the high flows. As the levels start to come down, I expect the fishing to continue to be great until we get down to our true summer flows. Many of our clients have been fishing in the 1400 cfs range and have caught quality smallmouth bass. A few large pike have also been landed making for a great time on the water.

30” of Northern pike is always a welcome site on the raft!

With the high water, most of the best fish are being caught on 3-4 inch streamers, however topwater is still in play. Just remember to let the fly land and sit for longer than you think. Don’t be in a rush, and wait for that explosion. Although the water is a tad high, don’t be afraid to get out on the river, safely, and take advantage of the wonderful temps before it gets too hot!

As always, I hope you have a great time on the water and I hope you had a Happy 4th of July!

Cheers,

Allen
